Begin with Jesus’ own question
The question Jesus asks his disciples still stands: who do you say that I am?
How to begin with this guide
- What should I understand first? Jesus is not merely a moral teacher. Catholic faith confesses him as true God and true man, the one in whom God comes near.
- What should I read or pray with? Pray with Mark 8:27-30 and answer Jesus’ question personally, not abstractly.
- What can I try this week? Read one Gospel scene and list what Jesus does, what he reveals, and what he asks.
Why Jesus cannot stay vague
Christianity stands on a person, not an idea. Catholic faith confesses Jesus as true God and true man, crucified, risen, and present with his Church.
Do not reduce Jesus to a helpful teacher
Do not reduce Jesus to a wise teacher, moral example, or symbol of kindness. Those are too small for the Gospel’s claim.
True God, true man, Saviour and Lord
The Church proclaims Jesus as the eternal Son made flesh, Saviour, Lord, Messiah, teacher, healer, judge, bridegroom, and Eucharistic gift.
Read one Gospel scene closely
Read Mark 8:27-30 first, then use CCC 422-429 to place Who Is Jesus within the Church’s faith, worship, moral life, and hope. Name one concrete next step before moving on.
Open the Scripture
Read the passage twice: once to understand the scene, and once to notice the invitation being made to you.
Catechism to consult
Use the Catechism reference to steady the language of the page and connect the topic to the Church’s larger teaching.
Answer Jesus personally
Read Mark 8:27-30 and answer Jesus’ question personally: who do you say that I am?
Where to meet Jesus next
Read one Gospel scene each day for a week. List what Jesus reveals, asks, heals, forgives, and promises.
Deeper resources
- Try The Case for Jesus or another trusted Gospel reliability resource.
- Read John 1:14
- Connect Jesus to Mass, confession, and the Eucharist.
For families, children, and conversation
With children, tell one Gospel story and ask: what does Jesus show us about God’s love?
A short prayer
Set aside 8 minutes. Begin with the Sign of the Cross and pray in your own words, or use this sentence:
Lord Jesus, help me to know you not only as an idea, but as the living Son of God. Open my heart to your words, your mercy, and your call to follow you. Give me courage to take one real step toward you today. Amen.
